There is an urgent need for more tools to monitor the business activities in sanitation service delivery. One useful tool for Water For People would be a GPS tracking system for cesspool and pit emptying businesses. It is currently very hard to track number of trips that these trucks make to the emptying site as these businesses don’t keep records of these activities. This tool would allow us to understand the business activities and trends of pit emptying services, create an evidence base, and improve support.
A part of creating sanitation solutions that last means that there are businesses in place that will deal with ongoing operations and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure. There are currently very few tools to help entities like the NGO Water For People and its private sector partners track the business activity build and evidence base and plan better. As a test the tracking system could be put on cesspool tankers and gulper devices in Malawi and developers could build out the back end system that would handle the tracking data.
As programs support these activities, such as cesspool and pit emptying it will be necessary to monitor and track the activities of these (sometimes informal) businesses. Eventually this could also be a system that allows consumers to request services and possibly text message features. The system will also help monitor and ensure coverage is being met.
